December 01, 2011 - Andrew S. Weyrich, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and a member of the Molecular Medicine Program, has recently received two international awards recognizing his excellence in the fields of Thrombosis and haemostasis. The first was an International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostsasis Award for Contribution to Haemostasis. The ISTH Biennial Award for Contributions to Haemostasis (BACH) was presented during the biennial Congress of the Society, held this summer in Kyoto, Japan. Initiated in 1982, the BACH awards recognize individuals who, in the opinion of their co-workers and peers, have made significant contributions to research and education in blood coagulation. Once every two years, five society members whose accomplishments are internationally regarded as exemplary models of excellence in research and teaching receive the BACH Investigator Recognition Award. The Nominating Committee for the Biennial Awards is comprised of the Society's Senior Advisory Council, 99 distinguished and internationally recognized experts who have previously served as elected members of the ISTH Scientific and Standardization Committee.

This fall, on behalf of the American Heart Association's Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Dr. Weyrich was selected to receive a 2011 ATVB Special Recognition Award in Thrombosis. This award, established in 1981, is presented to a Council member who has made major contributions to the affairs of a Scientific Council over a continuing period of time and substantial professional contributions to the field. Two council members are recognized in the field of thrombosis each year at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions, the leading cardiovascular meeting in the country, held this year in Orlando, Florida. The honorees were each presented with a plaque at the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Reception.
